The ideal workspace
configuration is determined
when everything used in the
execution of the occupant's
tasks is identified and placed
in the location that accommo-
dates their most efficient and
comfortable utilization.
PLANNING THROUGH FUNCTIONAL NEEDS ANALYSIS
Example: In the workstation layout below, the employee must perform desk work that requires the use of binders for reference purposes, and a calculator to add totals that are then recorded on the hard copy before being input into the computer. Questions sometimes arise during this work that requires the use
of the phone and additional binder reference. A final hard copy
is printed, checked, and inserted into the appropriate file folder.
If used for completing the task described above, this workstation would impair the productivity and efficiency of the occupant and cause them to experience discomfort that would worsen over time.
Every item used to complete the task is located in a manner that supports its most functional use and the physical needs of the occupant - to both reduce discomfort and increase productivity.
